FACTS ABOUT THE HULETT ORE UNLOADERS
The four Hulett Ore Unloaders at the historic C&P Ore Dock on Whiskey Island represent a nationally significant historic resource and contribute to Cleveland's distinctive industrial landscape and skyline.
The Hulett Ore Unloader was invented by Clevelander George H. Hulett (1846-1923), who first patented his ingenious machine for efficiently and economically unloading iron ore from lake freighters in 1898.
The Hulett Ore Unloader revolutionized the handling of iron ore at lower-lake ore ports and made Cleveland the largest iron ore terminus in the world.
Hulett Ore Unloaders once could be found at virtually every port on Lake Erie, including Conneaut, Ashtabula, Huron, and Toledo. There were more than a dozen Hulett machines in Cleveland alone. Today, those at the C&P Ore Dock, built for the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1911-12, are the last to survive.
More than 75 Hulett machines were built, all of them by the Wellman-Seaver-Morgan Company of Cleveland and its predecessor and successor firms.
The C&P Ore Dock, including the four Hulett Ore Unloaders, was designated a Cleveland Landmark in 1993 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. In 1998, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers designated the four Hulett Ore Unloaders as a Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark.
Preservation of the Hulett Ore Unloaders can enhance tourism and inspire local pride in Cleveland's rich industrial heritage.
The Committee to Save Cleveland's Huletts was organized in 1992, following the Huletts' removal from service. Our mission is to advocate and facilitate the permanent preservation of the four Hulett Ore Unloaders, with the goal of establishing an industrial heritage site open to public use and enjoyment. We believe such use can be compatible with continued operation of the dock as a bulk unloading facility.
